Betfair is predominantly known for its exchange but it does offer a sportsbook and other products. An exchange bookmaker brings together customers who want to place a bet with others who want to take a bet. The site brokers this transaction and earns a commission from bets struck rather than being reliant on losing bets like a traditional bookmaker. Betfair is a leading operator in the peer-to-peer betting sector.

Price Rush

Exchange odds are generally better than the odds offered by a conventional bookmaker as no margin is written into them. Exchange bookmakers make money by applying a commission to bets rather than the profit margins in the odds. Price Rush exaggerates this price edge by increasing the odds even more. The percentage increase is based on market forces determined by the thousands of bets being placed on the Betfair system. The potential return will increase the percentage of the price rush.

Price Rush is available on certain markets for the following sports:

  • Football
  • Horse Racing
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Basketball

In all cases Price Rush will result in better odds and never worse odds.

How to sign up?

The main horizontal menu lists on the Betfair homepage across all products. The exchange vertical navigation bar displays the main betting sports. Existing customers are prompted to enter their unique username and password. There is a link to a procedure to retrieve a lost or forgotten username or password. Once these account details have been entered users click on a secure button containing the word ‘Login’. They then have access to their account and can deposit funds. New customers click on a black button containing the words ‘Join Now’. This takes them to a screen displaying the new customer offer of a £20 Free Bet. The page also displays details of how the exchange operates, the CashOut facility and details of the mobile version of Betfair.

In clicking ‘Join Now’ new customers are taken to a sign-up screen. Betfair operates the leading betting exchange in the world and is the marker leader in this sector. Other companies, like Matchbook have joined the market but Betfair has the most leagues, sports and markets and the best liquidity. The key to an efficient exchange is the amount of money bet into both sides of a market. This allows bets to be matched so that a backer and layer strike a mutually desirable bet for a specified amount and price. The bet acceptance (lay) price is always bigger than the bet back price. An exchange bookmaker brings together backers and layers and earns a commission on bets and not the outcome. The model has been copied but Betfair still dominate.

The Betfair exchange includes one of the biggest range of sports in online gambling. The popular sports of golf, horse racing, football, tennis and rugby union are displayed prominently on the sports navigation menu of the exchange Home page. All sports are then listed alphabetically from American Football to Winter Sports, 33 in total. Below the list of sports are links to some special features: Next Horse Race, Multiples, Sport on TV and Where is the money?

Football accounts for a vast number of markets on the Betfair website. The prominence of the major leagues reflects the betting interest in them and the most popular are as follows:

  • Barclays Premier League
  • The Championship
  • League One
  • League Two
  • Capital One Cup
  • Primera Division
  • Serie A
  • Bundesliga 1

The Betfair sportsbook looks different to the exchange. The 27 sports featured are displayed horizontally in columns rather than vertically in a one list. The number and range of sports reflects the sports offer in the exchange. The major difference between the two types of product is that there is no lay facility in the sportsbook. The most popular betting sports in the exchange are also the most popular in the sportsbook.

The Home Page of the sportsbook has quick links to the most bet on leagues of the day so the events linked change from day to day. At the time of writing there were quick links to Today’s Golf, Rugby World Cup, NFL, NBA and Serie A. In the same way Featured Coupons has links to a range of events in the following leagues: Premier League, UK Football, Today’s Racing and Today’s Greyhounds.

The Cash Out facility on horse racing is displayed prominently on the Home Page. This feature works in the sportsbook in exactly the same way as it does in the exchange. Customers have the option to close a bet before expiry to ensure some profit or reduce the overall loss. The margins and timings are tighter on horse racing than soccer as things happen more quickly and a race can last as little as one minute.

Football accounts for the most bets within the sportsbook. At the time of writing Betfair offered odds on 100 football events and 48 leagues in total. English football accounted for the most competitions and markets within these specific leagues:

  • Barclays Premier League
  • Capital One Cup
  • English FA Cup
  • Johnstones Paint Trophy
  • League One
  • League Two
  • National League
  • The Championship

The third most popular betting sport with Betfair on their sportsbook after football and racing is tennis. They offer odds on the main ATP and WTA tours in addition to Challenger event matches and some International Tennis Federation tournaments. Ante post odds are available for the next year’s majors, both male and female. Odds are available in the set, games and points markets. Twenty four other sports are covered in the sportsbook.

Placing a Bet

Bettors select a sport from the main Sportsbook menu and then choose a sport, such as football. Matches appear by categories one of which is UK Football. Today’s and upcoming matches are list with the 1X2 odds displayed. When an option is selected a BetSlip appears containing one or more selections. A stake is entered and the potential return is calculated based on the current odds. Customers then click on a yellow box containing the words ‘Place Bets’ at which point the bet is confirmed and accepted.

Sports in the exchange are displayed on a vertical navigation bar. The sport, league and market selection process is much the same as for in the sportsbook. The one major difference for exchange bettors is that both back and lay odds are displayed. When a market is selected the back and lay odds are shown in addition to the amount matched. Customers can specify odds at which to have a bet matched and then enter the stake. The calculated liabilities are shown and bettors click a yellow box containing the words ‘Place Bets’. Bets are either matched, partly matched or unmatched. Unmatched bets can be cancelled or left in the system to be matched when the price is taken by the bettor on the other side of the transaction.

Many live events are streamed directly to a customer’s desktop. Pictures described as live are delayed by 2-5 seconds and for a number of sports the delay might be longer. Streamed events can be accessed by selecting the sport and time from drop down menus. The most watched events are those for football, tennis and horse racing. Customers select an event from the schedule after logging into their account.

When this review was being undertaken Betfair were offering In-Play events for the following sports:

  • Football
  • Tennis
  • Snooker
  • Basketball
  • Golf

The In-Play calendar included events in rugby union, American Football and Basketball.

Cash out

Cash Out is a feature of live betting on Betfair. Customers can close a bet before expiry to ensure winning or minimise losses. The conventional betting model is to place a bet before an event starts and take the winnings or accept the losses at the end. In-play betting added the concept of trading markets during an event and Cash Out is an extension of that development. Customers can use a slider to specify how much or little is cashed out.

Cash Out is available on Betfair for the following markets and sports:

  • UK and Irish racing
  • Singles and multiples
  • Football
  • Tennis

When an event is available for live betting customers must click on a yellow button containing the word ‘Take’ in order to put Cash Out in operation. All or part of the bet can be closed so some is left to run until the final result is known.

The ‘Take Stake’ feature allows traders to take out the exact value of the initial stake. In effect this equates to a risk free bet as the only potential outcomes are winning or breaking even. The timing of cashing out is important as markets are suspended briefly to update odds after a significant event such as a goal, penalty or red card in a football match.

Betfair is the biggest sports betting exchange in the world and one of the most successful companies across the whole spectrum of sectors. Since being founded in 2000 it has grown in terms of customers, sports, leagues and markets. The advent of betting In-Play and CashOut has helped this growth because exchange betting is suited to trading during an event. Other operators have tried to replicate the Betfair business plan without much success and Betfair are by some way market leaders. Advertising on television and in the national and sporting Press in the UK has consolidated Betfair’s position in the online gaming market.

The Betfair website is easy to navigate and robust and reliable. The exchange is the best in the world with a multitude of markets. Transactions are completed quickly and overall the site’s performance is excellent. One area of concern is customer care in that some users report a lack of attention because they are small stakers.

The promotions are many and varied but not one stands out as exceptional. The offer through the sportsbook and exchange is comprehensive and the company should continue to proper and maintain their market share as it is difficult for a new operator to break into the sector.
