VAR SHOULD BE SCRAPPED

Chris Sutton and Keith Hackett’s thoughts on VAR

Former Chelsea and Celtic forward, Chris Sutton revealed his thoughts on why VAR needs to be scrapped:

“VAR needs to be scrapped until referees get a better level of training and they’re competent in making decisions. Watching games this season, we’ve seen some incredibly bad decisions. At this time of the season they need to scrap it and bring it back next season once all the training has taken place.

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett shared his thoughts on why VAR isn’t working and why Mike Riley is partly to blame:

“VAR is a mess, but referees need help. When I was boss of the PGMOL and analysed decisions, mistakes were made by referees because we didn’t have a viewing angle. Therefore, I’m in strong support of VAR but we’ve made the biggest mess of a piece of technology available to referees.

The current referees have been fully exposed, and if I was a referee now, I would not operate under Mike Riley’s regime. It currently states that referees cannot look at a pitch side monitor, but I would want to use the technology to help me rectify my decision. Mike likes to manufacture referees with no personality, and now only Mike Dean is the only one with a personality. There are good referees that shouldn’t be leaving the Premier League, like Howard Webb and Mark Clattenburg.”
