World Cup 2018 | Qualifying Team Guide | Denmark

Russia 2018 will see Denmark compete at the World Cup for the fifth time in their history. The team’s greatest success at the World Cup came back at France 1998 when they reached the quarter finals. Ranked 12th in the world currently by FIFA, Denmark should not be underestimated. They are a team that usually go under the radar, but one that is certainly capable of causing an upset or two in Russia. Could we see a Denmark World Cup upset?

Denmark World Cup – Road to Russia

The Danes did not have an easy ride through the World Cup Qualifiers. They were pitched into a group with Poland, who proved to be as tough as expected.

The rest of the group was admittedly fairly straight forward, with Denmark facing Montenegro, Romania, Armenia, and Kazakhstan. Denmark comfortably breezed past Kazakhstan and won both home and away matches against Armenia.

In both matches against Romania, however, Denmark were only able to secure draws. In a battle against Poland for the top spot in the group and automatic qualification for the World Cup, these draws were painful for Denmark. What was even more damaging though, was a shock 1-0 defeat against Montenegro at home. This was only the third match in Denmark’s qualification campaign and understandably caused some concern.

However, their form picked up, and on September 1st of last year, they completed a resounding 4-0 victory over Poland. This put them back in contention for automatic qualification. However, it was not to be. Poland (who are currently ranked 7th in the world) maintained their form and cruised to the top of the table.

Denmark then had to go through the UEFA second round World Cup qualifiers. For the play-off, they were drawn against the Republic of Ireland who were still playing with confidence following a successful Euro 2016 campaign.

The first leg was a tense affair, and ended in a 0-0 draw. In the return fixture, played in Dublin, Ireland opened the scoring after only 6 minutes. However, Denmark dominated from then on, and finished the match 5-1 to the good.

Denmark World Cup Schedule

Denmark will play their first match the 2018 World Cup on the 16th June (4pm GMT) against Peru. Peru will also be playing their fifth World Cup finals, and should prove to be awkward opponents. Temperament can be an issue for Peru, but they are dangerous in attack. Even just on paper, they will be tough for Denmark, as Peru are currently ranked one place above them in the FIFA rankings.

Next will come what is surely a must-win match for Denmark. They play Australia on the 21st June, and will be expected to defeat the Socceroos who are the lowest ranked team in the group by far.

Last, Denmark will face group favourites: France. Historically, Denmark have done well against France. Their biggest ever win was against France. And it was 17-1. The problem is that the match took place 110 years ago.

Back in the present, France will be expected to dispatch with Denmark. Though they can be a little inconsistent at times, they came through what was potentially the toughest UEFA World Cup qualifying group. They beat Sweden to the top of the table, and even knocked out the Netherlands.

They lost only one match in the campaign (to Sweden). Even if Denmark reach this point of the group stages in a good position, they will have a large and intimidating French mountain to climb if they are to reach the knock-out stages at Russia 2018.

Denmark World Cup Key Players

Simon Kjær—the Danish captain—brings a lot of experience and a level head to the back row and the team in general. A stalwart in defence and a consistent performer, the Sevilla centre back will be guaranteed to play a major role in Denmark’s performance in Russia.

But, Christian Eriksen is without a doubt the star of the Denmark football world. In the play-off against the Republic of Ireland, Eriksen scored a hat-trick. He’s not solely responsible for the dismantling of the Irish resistance, but he certainly played the biggest part.

This was following an astonishing personal performance throughout the World Cup qualifiers. He scored 11 goals in eight matches of the campaign. This feat still didn’t win him top scorer in their group because of the unstoppable force that is Robert Lewandowski.

Either way, his recent form is exceptional. The Danes will be hoping that he can bring all of skill and lethal finishing with him to the World Cup Finals. In a tough group, he will need all of his ability for sure.

The main obstacle to Danish sides in the past has been an imbalance of talent within their own squad. But it doesn’t seem to be the case currently. Though they do have a shining beacon in Eriksen, the entire squad proved themselves very capable at the World Cup qualifiers.
