From research we conducted in November 2019 we have found out what fans really think of VAR this season and whether it should be scrapped before next season.

Manchester City fans are most against VAR with 88% claiming it’s had a negative influence on their club, and 73% suggesting it should be scrapped before next season.

Liverpool fans are second only to Brighton in terms of most supporting VAR, 43% of Reds fans feel VAR had a positive impact and 47% believe it should stay for good.

WHAT DO PREMIER LEAGUE FANS THINK OF VAR?

VAR has been the hottest debate this Premier League season, and has divided opinions of fans, pundits and players alike. To reveal more, we have surveyed football fans from each of the Premier League clubs. Our research from November 2019 has revealed what fans think of the new technology this season, and whether VAR has a future in the English game.

It might not come as a surprise that table toppers Liverpool are one of the most content with the new technology. Four in 10 (43%) of their fans are in support of VAR and feel it’s had a positive impact on decisions in Liverpool games. The Reds are second only to Brighton, with fans of the Seagulls revealing 47% are in support of the new technology.

In contrast, the overall response to the new technology was a landslide for fans hoping this season will be the end of VAR. Seven out of 10 fans of a Premier League team think VARs had a negative impact on the Premier League. While Manchester City fans feel the hardest done by, with the majority of fans against VAR (88%) and the decisions made this season.

The future of VAR could still be in the balance, as rumours circulate that Arsene Wenger has been brought in to find a solution to improve VAR. However, our research has revealed which fans think it’s been a step too VAR and needs to be scrapped. The Blue side of Manchester again feels hard done by, with 73% of City’s fans feeling VAR should be scrapped before the new season. The only fans to feel more strongly against VAR are the Bournemouth followers, with 75% agreeing it’s time for a change back to old ways.

FANS OVERALL AGAINST VAR

Overall, fans are resoundingly against a Premier League with VAR, as 58% claim it should be scrapped before next season and only 42% backing it to stay. But interestingly, one set of fans are in favour of a Premier League future with VAR. 60% of Aston Villa fans feel that VAR doesn’t need to be scrapped and should stay on next season. Along with the Villans, Brighton fans remain 50 / 50 on the future of VAR, with the supporters split 50% each way on whether VARs should stay.
