John Barnes’ All-time Premier League XI – Premier League Tips

John Barnes was one of the finest players to play in the Premier League since its creation in 1992. With over seven years of Premier League playing experience and many years watching English football, Barnes has selected his best ever Premier League lineup along with a manager. This is John Barnes‘ best ‘All-Time Premier League XI’.

Premier League Tips - All time XI

Sir Alex Ferguson (Manager)

– Manager at Manchester United for 27 years
The notorious manager footballing history until Jurgen Klopp overtakes him! Sir Alex won the Premier League thirteen times and is widely regarded as the best Premier League manager of all time

Peter Schmeichel (GK)

– 292 appearances for Manchester United
A brilliant goalkeeper, who performed at a high level for many years whilst in the Premier League, playing at Manchester United. A player who won every trophy at United.

Gary Neville (RB)

– 400 appearances for Manchester United
At school, the worst players played Right-Back, they’re the last players in the school team so Gary Neville is there for me! Joking aside, as a defender he put everything on the line whenever he wore a United shirt and played at a consistently high level for over 10 years winning numerous Premier League titles as well as the Champions League.

Rio Ferdinand (CB)

– 312 appearances for Manchester United
Everything he’s won with Manchester United, and the number of times he played for England is very impressive. He organised and martialed the Manchester United defence for over 10 years, winning the Champions League and the Premier League, his major honours record speaks for itself.

John Terry (CB)

– 492 appearances for Chelsea
Similarly, to Rio, John Terry was so consistent for Chelsea over so many years, one of the Premier League’s best defenders of all time for sure. Again, his record of titles is phenomenal.

Ashley Cole (LB)

– 229 appearances for Chelsea
Ashley Cole, as well as playing well for Arsenal on the left side of defence, went to Chelsea and continued to play consistently well for many years. Earning over 100 England caps over such a long period of time, he places himself in this team quite comfortably.

Roy Keane (CDM)

– 326 appearances for Manchester United
It was tight between Keane and Viera. He (Roy Keane) played a little bit before the Premier League started at Nottingham Forest for one or two years. But since 1993, Roy was at the heart of the Manchester United midfield until he left in 2005 and won everything there was to win as a player.

Frank Lampard (RM)

– 429 appearances for Chelsea
People talk about Cristiano Ronaldo, but he was not in the Premier League for his best years, those were at Real Madrid. For the goals that he scored, Lampard gets into my midfield. Frank ran the Chelsea midfield for many years and scored so many goals.

Steven Gerrard (AM)

– 504 appearances for Liverpool
The best player in the country of any era in the Premier League era. Gerrard did everything during for Liverpool during his career, he defended well, attacked and scored some outstanding goals for the club. For me he’s Liverpool’s best ever player.

Ryan Giggs (LM)

– 672 appearances for Manchester United
Giggs, for a long time was the best left footed player in the country and over the world throughout his career. It hurts me to say it because he’s a United player, but you just don’t get much better than him in that position. Someone like Zola who didn’t make this team, was great at Chelsea for a few years, but not long enough to push Giggs out the team.

Wayne Rooney (ST)

– 393 appearances for Manchester United
Wayne Rooney wasn’t just an out and out goalscorer despite being Manchester United and England’s leading marksman. He also loved dropping deeper to pick up the ball and create chances for his teammates. A top player for Manchester United, England and the Premier League. Alongside Steven Gerrard he’s had the biggest impact in the Premier League.

Alan Shearer (ST)

– 303 appearances for Newcastle United
He’s the all-time leading goal scorer in Premier League history. An outright number nine, who got in the box and scored loads of goals for a long period of time. He’s probably not the most talented, that would Robbie Fowler or Henry, but they didn’t score as many as Shearer did.
