We’ve honed on in our Premier League tips article about how Manchester City have practically won the Premier League already. Well, that was hammered home even further the past weekend. Manchester City’s win, and Manchester United’s draw means that City now have the largest ever points lead in Premier League history at Christmas.
The race for the top 4 took another interesting turn as Chelsea drew, and Liverpool and Arsenal played out a 3-3 Christmas cracker. This was capitalised on by Tottenham, who confidently put high flyers Burnley to bed thanks to Harry Kane hat-trick. Kane is now 1 goal away from breaking Alan Shearers long held record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year.
At the other end of the table is was the day of relegation head-to-heads. Stoke piled pressure on West Brom who are on a staggering run of 18 games without victory – which is a club record.
Over Christmas, if you’re bored of watching yet another re-run of Home Alone, the Grinch, or Elf, fear not. The next round of the Christmas Football schedule is upon us! We’re going to bring you our favourite Premier League tips for Matchday 20.
Premier League Tips – Tottenham have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 3 matches against Southampton in all competitions
Tottenham blew off the cobwebs from their defeat to Manchester City with a very convincing win against Burnley. Turf Moor is a very difficult place for sides to go, and frankly, Tottenham could have won by 5 or 6 if their finishing had been better.
But 3-0 is a good result, and they will be looking at their upcoming fixture list and fancying their chances of putting together a run that cements them back into the top 4 standings.
With Victor Wanyama back any day now, he will add some vital steel to the Tottenham midfield during an intense period of games. Just Toby Alderweireld is missing, but is only a few weeks away.
Pochettino will be looking forward to facing his old club, Southampton, and has fond memories of his time at the club.
But there will be no time for sentimentality, and he will expect that his side show the same intensity that they did against Burnley, something that had been missing for most of the season if truth be told.
Southampton have been a bit of a mixed bag this season, and while they’ve impressed in some games, in others they’ve looked very poor. Nathan Redmond has really shone and has been a bright spot in an otherwise uninspiring season.
This is the early boxing day game, and as you’ll see from the first of our Premier League Tips, we’re expecting goals galore to help cure your hangovers.
Premier League Tips – Watford have lost their last 4 matches (Premier League)
A great start to the season has really tailed off for Watford in recent weeks. At one stage they were nearing the dizzy heights of the Premier League’s top 4. But they’re not on a run of 4 losses and plummeting like a stone down the league table.
A huge part of this is down to their injury list. Watford currently have 8 players out through injury, and also have Troy Deeney missing through suspension. This has meant that Marco Silva has had to experiment with his team and has been unable to find a winning combination.
The worrying thing for Watford is that they’re now just 6 points above the drop zone. Unless they start winning, they could quite easily find themselves dragged into the dog fight.
Leicester are a team who have a somewhat different experience this season. In contrast to Watford, Leicester got off to a poor start. This saw their manager sacked and Claude Puel handed the job.
Since then, Leicester have been flying, with Mahrez and Vardy in particular looking back to their best. While they drew 2-2 against Manchester United, they did so in testing circumstances, so that draw will feel like a win. They’re now unbeaten in 7 away matches, which is the second longest streak in the league this season.
Our Premier League tip for this fixture may be quite obvious, but we think it pays to keep it simple.
Premier League Tips – Liverpool have scored at least 2 goals in 5 of their last 6 home matches against Swansea in all competitions
Liverpool are like a box of chocolates, you never know what one you’re going to get. This was never more evident than the match against Arsenal which summed them up nicely.
Liverpool went into a 2-0 lead and looked in complete control. Then in just 4 and a half minutes, they were 3-2 down. This was thanks to some terrible defending. This is something which has plagued them this season.
But they have a devastating attack, so they’re always in with a chance. It’s Liverpool’s attacking quality which is keeping their dream of a top 4 finish alive. And in Mo Salah, they have the Premier League’s joint top goalscorer.
To keep things fresh, it is expected that Klopp will make some changes to his side for the match against Swansea. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum are the two most likely to step in.
They face a Swansea side that are in terrible trouble. The Welsh club sit firmly on the bottom of the Premier League table. They need to start picking up wins and fast.
One way that they might do this, is if strikers Abraham finds his goalscoring boots.Wilfried Bony is out through injury but he must contribute when he is fit too.
The direction we’re going in for this Premier League tip will probably not shock you either.
