The 15th round of Premier League matches begins with Chelsea’s home match against Newcastle on Saturday lunchtime. The lineup for these Premier League Tips include one stand-out fixture as Arsenal host Manchester United on Saturday evening. Manchester City face West Ham on Sunday, Liverpool visit Brighton and Tottenham make the short journey to Watford.
But first, let’s quickly recap the week that was. A late winner from Raheem Sterling enabled Manchester City to secure a club record 12th consecutive league win on Wednesday night. They maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Manchester United’s 4-2 win at Watford on Tuesday had put some pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side. But they responded with a 2-1 win over a stubborn Southampton – their 19th successive win in all competitions.
Antonio Rudiger’s solitary strike was enough to give Chelsea a 1-0 win over Swansea at Stamford Bridge. While substitute Olivier Giroud scored twice in Arsenal’s thumping 5-0 win over Huddersfield at the Emirates, keeping Arsene Wenger’s side in fourth place.
Liverpool eased past Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium, with Mohamed Salah coming on in the second half to score twice. He strengthened his position at the top of the scoring charts, while Burnley moved into sixth place with their 2-1 win at Bournemouth. The only losers in the top seven were Tottenham. They suffered their third defeat in five league games when they were beaten 2-1 by Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.
Premier League Tips: Rooney Makes History
A hat-trick from Wayne Rooney, including a remarkable strike from inside his own half, helped lift the gloom at Goodison Park. Everton thrashed West Ham 4-0 on Wednesday night and the Toffees have a great chance to get some momentum going. They’ll need it ahead of next week’s Merseyside derby as Sam Allardyce takes charge for the first time.
The former England manager was in the stands to see his new side secure just their second win in nine games. Although the scoreline flattered them, it will have restored some of the confidence drained from the squad over a torrid autumn.
It was a second successive home league win for Everton following their recovery to beat Watford 3-2. They have now scored 10 goals in their last four league games. It doesn’t augur well for Huddersfield, who have played well at home but haven’t scored an away goal since the opening day of the season, when they beat Crystal Palace 3-0.
David Wagner’s side had their chances at the Emirates on Wednesday. But Arsenal converted theirs and the Terriers have now lost their last four away matches by increasing amounts – 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0.
Premier League Tips: Leister City vs Burnley
The biggest surprise about Burnley’s magnificent start to the season is their superb away form. The 2-1 win at Bournemouth was their fourth of the season. They have lost only once – 3-0 at Manchester City. Though, they have already secured twice as many points on the road as they did during the whole of last season.
However, they face a tough test on Saturday when they visit Leicester. Leicester have been improving under Claude Puel and deservedly beat Tottenham 2-1 on Tuesday. The 2015/16 champions have lost only one of their last nine games in all competitions. That was a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in which they gave a strong performance.
They have won three of their last six league games and probably ought to have done better. Instead, they surrendered leads to draw at both Stoke and West Ham when their performances merited more. They have looked good so far under Puel, while their improvement has coincided with Vincent Iborra’s integration. This has restored some of the midfield steel they lost when N’golo Kante moved to Chelsea.
Premier League Tips: Arsenal vs Man Utd
While Guardiola’s sends Mancester City out to maintain possession and score, that isn’t the case with Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. His priority in the biggest games is for his side not to concede, knowing they have the quality in attack to pinch something on the break.
It’s a tactic which has seen six of their last eight games against either Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham reach half-time goalless, including all three this season. It paid dividends in the 1-0 win over Tottenham and, to a lesser extent, in the goalless draw at Liverpool, while Chelsea were able to breach the red wall for a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
We can expect more of the same at the Emirates on Saturday, where Arsenal are defending a 100 per cent home record. But they’ll find it difficult to break down the division’s best defence.
Premier League Tips: Watford vs Tottenham
Tottenham have been struggling to recreate their Champions League form in domestic competition, winning only one of their last six league and cup games around their victories over Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester was their third in a row away from home in the league and pushed them down into seventh place, four points adrift of the top four. They have already qualified as group winners in the Champions League, so next week’s visit of APOEL is academic, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will demand that they put European football to the back of their minds until February and give a response when they visit Watford.
The Hornets have made a solid start to the season. But they’ve looked stronger away from home than they have at Vicarage Road, where they have the worst home defensive record in the Premier League, conceded 15 goals. The bulk of those have come in games against Manchester City (0-6), Manchester United (2-4) and Liverpool (3-3), with all three of those teams scoring in each half.
