Willie Mullins and Nico de Boinville dominated proceedings at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, as the two were crowned leading trainer and jockey. Mullins dominated the meeting with four successes, equaling Nicky Henderson but with more second places, which helped him take home the award.

Klassical Dream won the opening race; Duc de Genievres locked the victory in the Arkle Challenge Trophy; and finally, Le Breuil won the last race of the day – the National Hunt Chase. Having won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle with Klassical Dream, Ruby Walsh registered a landmark 59th win at the Festival and became the most successful Cheltenham jockey in history.

On Wednesday, Altior managed to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase for the second year in a row. His jockey was Nico de Boinville on both occasions. Aidan Coleman brought Paisley Park to victory in Wednesday’s Stayers’ Hurdle.

On Friday, the Gold Cup was taken away by Al Boum Photo, ridden by Paul Townend. Willie Mullins’ first Gold Cup win secured his position as the most successful Festival trainer with as many as 65 wins.

With 14 Grade 1 races over the four days at Cheltenham, each day features its own championship race, and with little to choose between the frontrunners at this stage, it is well worth taking a look at some of the trends from previous races before placing a bet.

Champion Hurdle

As the most prestigious hurdle race of the season, the race consists of horses navigating their way round the two-mile-long course, with eight hurdles over a circuit and a little of the Old Course at Cheltenham. With the first race being ran back in 1927, here are some of the most important trends to look for when placing a bet.

  • Price average of winners for the last 10 years: 8/1
  • Winning favourites or joint favourites since 2007: 5
  • Range of starting prices of winners: 4/5 to 22/1
  • Best trainer record: N. Henderson 6 wins (SYT 85, 86, 87, Punjabi 09, Binocular 10, Buveur D’Air 17)
  • Best jockey record: Ruby Walsh 4 wins (Hurricane Fly 11, 13, Faugheen 15) & Tim Molony, 4 wins.

Champion Chase

The Champion Chase is the most prestigious steeplechase race in the calendar, and with 12 fences over the two-mile-long circuit, it is one of the most exciting of the whole Festival. The first Champion Chase was run in 1959, and the following are some of the most important statistics from races since then.

  • Price average of winners for the last 10 years: 6/1
  • Winning favourites or joint favourites since 2007: 3
  • Range of starting prices of winners: 1/4 (1.25) to 16/1
  • Best trainer record: Tom Dreaper 6 wins
  • Best jockey record: Pat Taaffe and Barry Gerghty with 5 wins each

Stayers’ Hurdle

Run over three miles, the Stayers’ Hurdle is the most eagerly anticipated long-distance hurdle event of the season, taking place in almost two circuits of the New Course at Cheltenham. The race was rebranded as Stayers’ Hurdle in 2017, and there have been many fantastic races during its more than a century-old history at Cheltenham.

  • Price average of winners for the last 10 years: 11/1
  • Winning favourites since 2007: 5
  • Range of starting prices of winners: 5/6 to 14/1
  • Best trainer record: Paul Nicholls 4 wins (Big Buck’s 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)
  • Best jockey record: Ruby Walsh 5 wins (Big Buck’s 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, Nichols Canyon 2017)

Cheltenham Betting Offers – Gold Cup

Undoubtedly the most anticipated race of the entire festival, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most illustrious chasing event of the whole season. Run over three miles, two and a half furlongs and 22 obstacles, ever since its first outing in 1819, it has been a firm favourite among the punters.

  • Price average of winners for the last 10 years: 6/1
  • Winning favourites since 2007: 5
  • Range of starting prices of winners: ¼ to 20/1
  • Best trainer record: Tom Dreaper 5 wins
  • Best jockey record: Pat Taafe 4 wins

Cheltenham Betting Offers & Tips

The Festival will soon take place in March 2020. The bookmakers have compiled their ante-post markets for those looking to make the most of some enticing odds from races across the four days.

Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle is one of the most popular races with the punters. The Champion Hurdle is the highlight for many on day one of the Festival. Unsurprisingly, it is 2019 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle champion, Klassical Dream, that heads the betting among many of the bookies. His trainer Willie Mullins has been waiting for the Champion Hurdle win since 2016 so he’s hopeful his last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner brings him the trophy in 2020.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Perhaps one of the most competitive looking races on paper at this early stage, with no clear favourite, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on day two of the Festival could well be one of the most wagered on. Blue Sari, the French 4-year-old gelding trained by Willie Mullins seems to be the bookmakers first choice as the event closes in.

Champion Chase

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is certainly one of the highlights of the Cheltenham Festival. The ante-post odds for 2020 already have an exciting look to them. The winner of both 2018 and 2019 Champion Chase, Altior has 20 victories and one third place under his belt, which is why this 9-year old gelding is the overwhelming favourite with the bookies once again. His trainer Nicky Henderson is once again looking to be in a prime position for another Cheltenham win to add to his stellar record.

Stayers’ Hurdle

It is 2019 Stayers’ Hurdle winner Paisley Park that currently heads the betting, in what would be yet another win for Emma Lavelle.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

The betting market for the Gold Cup in 2020 has already gained much attention. The most prominent contenders for taking the trophy are Al Boum Photo, the 2019 winner, and Kemboy, the French 7-year-old gelding who has more than 53% of wins in his career.

Al Boum Photo managed to win in 2019 by two and a half lengths over Anibale Fly in a spectacular finish. This is why it comes as no surprise to see this 7-year-old trained by Willie Mullins among the favourites in the ante-post odds for the upcoming race.

The other favourite, Kemboy, also has Mullins as his trainer. Willie Mullins has trained the most winners on the Festival and is hopeful to add more wins to his resume and solidify his number one position and the hall of fame status.

About Cheltenham Festival

Some of the best and most successful horses from the UK & Ireland line up to battle it out in the most iconic meetings in the British racing calendar. Punters anxiously await the final stages of races, hoping that their pick comes home a winner. The Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse in the South-West of England is held over four fantastic days of racing. Trainers and owners prime their star assets for the most important races of their careers. Although luck in-running plays a role in such races, given the quality and size of the field, contests are often run at a far greater speed than normal. Some of the best in the business hope to write their names into the record books.

With 28 races, the Cheltenham Festival offer a total prize money of over £6.12 million. It is little wonder that some 500 horses compete for their share. With only the Grand National able to compete in terms of prize money, punters too see the Festival as the perfect opportunity to get in on the action. Bettors will be on the look out for the best Cheltenham Betting Offers to start their betting journey during this great event.

The First Day

The first Tuesday of the Festival will be on March 10th, 2020 in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. With over 200,000 pints of Guinness consumed by spectators over the four days, it is safe to say that emotions run high throughout the event. The clash between top English, Irish, and French horses only adds to the excitement for many. The Irish contingent is well backed each year.

Any horse racing fan will be able to recall their favourite Cheltenham Festival moment. Shocks, photo finishes and falls add to the drama of the event over the years. Looking back, and still one of the most famous Cheltenham Cup memories is the epic Gold Cup contests in the 1960s between the incomparable Arkle and brave Mill House. Meanwhile, many will look back with fondness to the popular grey Desert Orchid’s Gold Cup triumph in 1989 or, more recently, Best Mate’s third Gold Cup in 2004. It remains to be seen who will write themselves into the history books in March next year.

Upcoming Races

While Cheltenham dominates March horse racing, across the pond the big focus is on May’s Kentucky Derby. The Run for the Roses, as it’s known, is the biggest US horse race on the calendar. Exclusively raced with three-year-old Thoroughbreds, the Kentucky Derby is widely known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports”. Make sure to place your bets early, as Kentucky Derby is set to kick off on May 2nd, 2020.
