METHODOLOGY
Data collection
For all of the prices, the search was pre-set for 2 adults attending the UEFA EURO 2024
Costs were further estimated by considering multiple components:
- Flight Costs: The airfare was calculated for a round trip between the capital city of each origin country and Germany. This includes the flight to Germany and the return flight from Berlin the day after the final match, with data sourced from Google Flights. As a side note, German fans were not included in the flights analysis since the event is taking place in Germany, thus they do not need to take a flight to get there, while Ukrainian fans were not included in the flights analysis due to no data available regarding flights from Ukraine.
- Accommodation Costs: Costs were gathered for stays during each match phase (Group Stage, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals) and costs were evaluated for two types of accommodations: Booking.com & Airbnb. In total, over 10 000 accommodation listings were analyzed.
- Train Travel Costs: For intra-country mobility, train fares were sourced from Bahn.de, focusing on travel between host cities.
- Food Cost: Data was gathered from Numbeo, and included average prices for 3x Restaurant Meals per person per day for selected cities.
- Ticket Cost: Average of Category 1, Category 2, and Category 3 ticket prices for different stages of tournament were collected from the official website of UEFA.
Data Collection
Data was automatically gathered, using Python scripts. These scripts fetched real-time prices for flights, hotel rooms, rentals, and train tickets.
Data Transformation
Raw data was transformed into a manageable format, which involved cleaning, structuring, and consolidating data to prepare for analysis.
Data Analysis
The final step was a comprehensive analysis of the gathered data. This involved calculating the total expected cost for fans from each country to attend the matches, considering all possible travel and stay scenarios.
