  • Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic top the table for highest cup final win rate throughout the football pyramid
  • Carabao Cup finalists Newcastle United can’t hold their nerve, having suffered defeat in all three of their previous appearances since 1980/81
  • Leeds United hold the worst record in cup finals
  • Manchester City boast the highest win rate among the traditional ‘big six’

Peterborough United are kings in cup finals, while Carabao Cup finalists, Newcastle United have a worrying record of collecting runners-up medals, according to a new study.

The research, courtesy of BonusCodeBets.co.uk, analysed a variety of cup finals – from the Champions League to the EFL Trophy – and found that The Posh and Charlton Athletic are the only teams across the English football pyramid to boast a 100%-win rate in a minimum of three cup finals since 1980/81.

Peterborough have been flawless, winning all five of their Play-Off and EFL Trophy finals, edging out the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea as England’s true big-game specialists.

And with another EFL Trophy final on the horizon in April, could they make it a sizzling six from six? The bookies might want to start paying attention.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United fans dreaming of ending their trophy drought against Liverpool this Sunday might want to avert their eyes now. Only four other teams have more finals without a win than the Magpies’ record of three defeats from three over the period.

With another shot at silverware looming, history suggests it could be yet another day of heartbreak on Tyneside.

Newcastle’s opponents, however, know how to get the job done. Liverpool boasts a solid 66%-win rate in cup finals since 1980, lifting 21 trophies in 32 appearances – potentially making the Reds even firmer favourites this weekend.

But for those looking for dark horses, League Two Play-Off hopefuls Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra are quietly flexing some serious cup pedigree, with win rates of 80% and 75% respectively. Not bad for a couple of clubs who aren’t regulars at England’s top table.

10 worst performing cup final teams since 1980/81:

When it comes to the so-called ‘Big Six’, Spurs are holding the wooden spoon, winning fewer than half of their 13 finals (46%) since the 1980s.

Manchester City are the undisputed cup final kings when it comes to regular success, winning 11 of their 15 appearances. Their biggest rivals, Liverpool (66%) and Manchester United (62%) are hot on their heels, but with 11 cup final defeats apiece, they’ve had their fair share of heartbreak.

‘Big Six’ cup final records since 1980/81:

Spokesperson for BonusCodeBets.co.uk said: “With the first cup final of the season fast approaching, all eyes are on serial underachievers Newcastle United to see if they can finally shake off their bottle-job reputation – or add another chapter to their hard-luck story.

“Meanwhile, Peterborough United are proving they’re still the real deal in knockout competitions, eyeing yet another trophy despite their relegation worries in League One. Silverware and survival? Now that would be a proper fairytale!”
