A masterful performance for Martin Odegaard in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea saw the Gunners briefly find themselves top of the league. Former Liverpool winger has been a huge fan of the creative midfielder and shared his views on why he’s been so important to the Arsenal side this season. Barnes also explained why Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi would be an ideal summer signing.
Martin Odegaard: Arsenal’s secret goals machine
Martin Odegaard is having a great season as a professional footballer. Arsenal are currently only one point behind the current league leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand over them. Odegaard has scored a total of 14 goals this season, including two in the recent game against Chelsea. Barnes is impressed with Odegaard’s ability to score more goals this season.
“Odegaard has been fantastic and his importance as the number ten is that he’s the creative hub of the team. He’s very creative. Now he’s added goals to his game which is impressive.”
“You can see the potential he had at Real Madrid but now he has more experience, he works hard for the team, he’s a team player and he is very technical. This makes him the kind of player that Mikel Arteta likes.”
“He’s thriving at the moment as Arsenal’s captain.”
Could Marc Guehi offer Arsenal what they’re missing?
Both Tottenham and Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi. Although Jakob Kiwior joined Arsenal in the January transfer window, the Gunners could still use further reinforcements. Recent injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba have left the team short in defence, and Guehi has been mentioned as a potential player to help Mikel Arteta’s revolution. Barnes thinks that Guehi would be an excellent addition to Arsenal’s squad as they aim to compete in all four competitions next season.
“Marc Guehi would be a great signing for Arsenal and Tottenham.”
“He’s been knocking on the door of the England side for a few years now.”
“He’s English, he’s young with good technical ability on the ball and he’s quick so he’s a modern centre back.”
“He’s decent enough in the air to cope and he’s got a great attitude from what I’m led to believe. He’s a good character around the dressing room.”
