Liverpool currently find themselves fourth in the Premier League and just three points off the top of the league. We caught up with former Liverpool legend John Barnes to discuss his ambitions for the club this year. He also deep dived into Harvey Elliott’s hopes of a place in England’s Euro 2024 and rumours linking the club with a move for Jamal Musiala.

In this article:

  • Musiala would be a great Liverpool signing
  • Elliott could be England Euro 24 Championship wildcard
  • Liverpool will push City for the title

‘Would Be A Great Signing’

Jamal Musiala is a name that has been frequently mentioned in connection with Liverpool. Musiala is regarded as one of Europe’s top young attacking midfielders and is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. Barnes has shared his thoughts on the matter, supporting the potential acquisition of one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young stars.

“Jamal is young and he spent his academy days in England so he’s accustomed to how things work here. He would be a great signing for Liverpool.

“If you can get young, talented players coming to Liverpool it’s fantastic. From the profile of player we like and the way he plays, I’d love to see him at the club.”

Elliott Could Be England Euro 24 Championship Wildcard

Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott has set his sights on representing England in Euro 2024. However, his primary focus is to secure a regular spot in Liverpool’s first team. Elliott’s talent was evident from a young age when he debuted for Fulham’s senior squad. After an impressive performance with England’s U21 team at the Euro Championships over the summer, he now aspires to join the senior squad. Barnes opines that Elliott could provide Southgate with an additional creative alternative if the squad requires it.

“Harvey already had four or five players in front of him in Diaz, Salah, Gakpo, Jota and Salah in those attacking positions. It will be difficult for Harvey to break into the Liverpool team this season but I don’t think he has to be a regular starter for Liverpool to get into the England squad.

“Gareth Southgate has shown he will call players up even if they don’t start regularly for their club. Look at Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips. If you need a creative player, Harvey Elliott is worth considering.

“It’s harder for Harvey to break into the Liverpool front three than it is to get into the England squad. Harvey is young, he’s talented and he’s an option for England.

“He’s never let Liverpool down. He’s come off the bench and been creative and that’s what is expected from Harvey because he’s a very good player. He’s also done well for the England u21’s so the next step up for him would be the senior squad.”

Liverpool are set to take on Nottingham Forest this weekend, where they’ll be expected to pick up another relatively comfortably three points to show for their efforts at Anfield, as they look to maintain their 100% record on home soil so far this weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side are priced at 29/100 on bet365 to win against Forest. Barnes Makes Liverpool Title Claim

Liverpool’s impressive start to the season had led to talk of a potential title push for the Reds. Barnes is confident that Liverpool will be competing with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City for a league title push.

“I expect Liverpool to be much closer to the top of the league this season and in fact they should be in the top two. Man City are favourites but with the players we have we should be looking at a title run.”
