Match of the Day’s Jermaine Jenas has joined a long line of fans and pundits that believe Luton midfielder Ross Barkley deserves an England call-up following a fine reign of form for the Hatters. We caught up with former England star John Barnes to discuss the form of both Barkley and Luton Town led by manager Rob Edwards.

In this article:

  • Barkley has found a home at Luton
  • Barnes backs Luton to stay up

Barkley Has Found A Home At Luton

Ross Barkley was once upon a time a teen prodigy ready to take the footballing world by storm. He had all the tools to do so. His physical prowess matched up to his supreme technical ability on the ball. His ability to carry the ball and dribble was revered. How did such a talent end up moving from Everton to Chelesea, Aston Villa and Nice before ending up at Luton Town? Football certainly doesn’t favour all but he finally seems to have found a home at Luton according to John Barnes who has been impressed with the 30 year old midfielder.

“Ross Barkley has found a home. At Everton he was a superstar and has struggled since then. He had his spells at Chelsea and Nice but he’s finally found a home at Luton which suits him in terms of the way they play, the club they are.”

“I’m not now saying he’s going to leave Luton to play for Manchester United or Liverpool but he’s been in fine form.”

“England have loads of good attacking midfielders. Look at Maddison, Foden, Palmer Bellingham.”

“I think it would be difficult for him to get into the England squad this year because of the sheer competition for places. There are loads of creative players in the squad.”

“If England didn’t have the likes of Foden, Bellingham and Maddison he could be an option.’

“But he’s having a great season for Luton but Luton are still in the bottom five so we have to remember that.”

Barnes Backs Luton To Stay Up

Luton fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to fellow relegation rivals Sheffield United on Saturday which has harmed their hopes of staying up. Yet, they still find themselves outside the relegation zone and according to Barnes The Hatters have a great chance of staying up.

“Absolutely Luton have the capabilities of staying up. The harmony and togetherness is good. It’s fantastic.”

“Luton have a fighting chance of staying up. The bookies will probably have them as one of the favourites to go down but right now they’re out of the relegation zone.”

“They’ll have to work and fight for every game they’re in but they have the belief and the team spirit to stay up.”
