John Barnes was one of the best players to grace our beautiful game. He played the game for 20 years and has since spent the next 20 years watching and analysing football since his retirement. Always having a keen eye for brilliant talent, Barnes has studied the best players on the planet and selected his current best World XI.

John Barnes World XI Premier League Tips

Alisson (GK)

Not only has he proven last season what a great Goalkeeper he is, he also stabilises the Liverpool defence. He’s a real winner.

Trent Alexander Arnold (RB)

Thomas Meunier at PSG is one of the best right backs around, but Trent has had a fantastic season. His abilities going forward are so strong and he has shown some really impressive crossing and finishing in the last two seasons.

Virgil Van Dijk (CB)

Van Dijk is in this team, it goes without saying. He’s been the best player in the world and the season he’s had at Liverpool has just been incredible.

Sergio Ramos (CB)

Real Madrid
Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, the player I have alongside Virgil is Sergio Ramos, which the Liverpool players wouldn’t really like! But over the last ten years he’s been one of the best centre backs consistently. This is a defender who knows how to defend. Him and VVD would be impenetrable, he’s got to get into the side, for me.

Alphonso Davies (LB)

Bayern Munich
I was really impressed with Alphonso Davies against Tottenham. To come from Canada and to go and play for a team like Bayern Munich in the Champions League is very impressive. He’s comfortable, strong, good going forward and solid defensively.

N’Golo Kante (CDM)

I’ve gone for a holding midfield player because there are a lot of attacking players in this team, so it is important to balance. I’ve put in there my favourite defensive midfield player, who has been playing out of position at Chelsea. Kante, for me, is the best defensive midfielder in the world – I’d play him in front of the back four.

Frenkie De Jong (LCM)

De Jong works hard, he’s good defensively but isn’t afraid to get forward as well, he could play for Liverpool. He’s not one of these David Silva-type players, he creates but has a solid defensive game.

Kevin De Bruyne (RCM)

Manchester City
De Bruyne is my other pick in midfield. He also works incredibly hard but more offensively than De Jong. From an attacking point of view, he really has been the best midfield player or number ten in world football for the last few seasons.

Lionel Messi (RW)

My favourite player of all time has to be in there, Lionel Messi. He speaks for himself. What he’s done for the last few years and in terms of this season and last season at Barcelona has been incredible. Winning the League and running away with it. Cristiano Ronaldo is still an effective player, but he is not the power that he once was.

Robert Lewandowski (ST)

Bayern Munich
For the centre forward, I do like a classic number nine. I’ve gone for Robert Lewandowski because if you’re playing in a game where it’s tight and you want to get the ball in the box, you need a centre forward like Harry Kane or a Lewandowski, and for me he is the best number nine, a classic number nine. When you’re talking about an Ian Rush standard, he is the one for me in this team.

Sadio Mané (LW)

As much as Firmino, Mané has been my favourite Liverpool player and has been so impressive in the last year. It’s not just how many goals he scores, or the chances created, but how hard he works for the team as well. For me he’s been better than Salah this season.
