Jadon Sancho had a rough 2022/23 season at Manchester United as the English winger struggled with finding his best level, just as he also struggled mentally during the season.
Towards the end of the season, the winger experienced a bit of joy as he got some games and pulled off some decent performances.
We talked to Liverpool icon, John Barnes, who shared his thoughts on the winger. He also shared his opinion on Mason Mount as he is joining Manchester United after a disappointing season at Chelsea.
I feel sorry for Jadon Sancho
John Barnes implies that the high fee Manchester United gave for Jadon Sancho has been a part of making it difficult for the winger, especially with his performances not being amazingly well, which is why it will be difficult for him in the new season as well.
“It’s difficult because he went for a big fee to a big club and it hasn’t worked in the first two years for him. Especially as he’s a young player. It doesn’t matter how good you’ve been before.”
“If he starts and plays well for one or two games but then has a bad game people will only remember the bad game because of what’s happened in the past.”
“It’s always better to start off well at a club because if you fall away slightly you’ve already created a relationship with the fans where they trust and love you. They’ll be willing to give him more time.”
Barnes adds that he feels sorry for Jadon Sancho and believes that he might be pushed further down the pecking order as United are looking to add reinforcements to their squad. One of the threats to Sancho could be his England colleague Mason Mount who will be joining United after they had a £60m bid accepted by Chelsea.
“Now with United looking to improve they will be looking to add to their squad in the attacking areas which could push Sancho further down the pecking order in the squad.”
“I feel sorry for him because he’s a good player and Ronaldo took over the club which stopped players like Sancho showing what they can do.”
“He’s a young player with a high fee so it’s been difficult.”
‘I would like for Sancho to stay at United to prove people wrong because he’s still a young player and he’s got a lot of experience to gain.”
Mason Mount works harder than Bruno Fernandes
According to Barnes, Mason Mount will be a great addition to the Man United squad as he is a hard working midfielder, who could work very well in their formation.
‘Mason Mount works harder than Bruno defensively. Mount will work hard and track back which we know Bruno isn’t willing to do.”
“As much as he will also get forward and score goals. He also has a great attitude. Mount isn’t like Bruno. Bruno is the playmaker.”
“Mount plays as an eight who will work hard for the team and do what’s right for the team. In a 4-3-3 Mason Mount will do well at United.”
