We spoke to former Manchester United defender and two-time Premier League winner Paul Parker, and he has urged new manager Ruben Amorim to bring Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford. Parker also spoke about the Red Devils’ rumoured interest in Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.
The last international break of the year is in full swing but all Manchester United fans will be talking about is the imminent arrival of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach begins his tenure with a tricky trip against Ipswich Town at Portman Road Stadium
The arrival of a new coach also means speculation around new transfers that could help him implement his playing style. And there’s no hotter name in that regard, at the moment, than Viktor Gyokeres who has developed into one of Europe’s elite strikers at Sporting CP.
Gyokeres could be one of the best signings in the Premier League
The Swedish international has 23 goals and four assists in 18 club appearances across all competitions. It is safe to say that Gyokeres is on fire this season and clubs in England and Europe are salivating over his availability in January or next summer. More so, he has a connection to Amorim, with the new Manchester United boss working with him over the last year and a half whilst at Sporting.
Former Manchester United player Parker is an admirer of Gyokeres and has shared that he was surprised no club in England decided to get him after the Swede’s spell at Coventry City.
“I saw a lot of him when he was at Coventry. He was so good, but he has just improved even more since at Sporting. He is a goal scoring machine, and he is arguably one of the best strikers in the world.”
“A lot of us were surprised that Sporting managed to sign him, because other clubs here in England should have been interested, but in the end he joined Sporting, which has been a very good decision.”
In the former England international’s view, Gyokeres has the potential to be one of the Premier League’s best ever signings if he joins Manchester United. He points to Gyokeres’ familiarity with how Amorim wants to play, and also stresses that Rasmus Højlund needs competition up front – something that new signing Joshua Zirkzee has been unable to provide.
“I think it would be amazing if Man United can sign Gyokeres. In my opinion, it would be one of the best possible signings and maybe one of the best signings in recent times in the Premier League.”
“He knows how Amorim wants to play and vice versa. He would be the perfect addition, and also add some competition to Højlund who really needs it, because he hasn’t shown enough yet. Gyokeres would be a top striker in the Premier League.”
Alphonso Davies transfer is pointless
On the other end of the spectrum, Parker is not so enthused about Man Utd’s links to Alphonso Davies, who is in the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich.
Parker’s lack of enthusiasm around Davies is not due to his quality but because of the Canadian’s public admiration for Real Madrid. Parker feels that Davies’ only choice is Real Madrid and Man Utd would be silly if they try to get him.
“I think Alphonso Davies wants to go to Real Madrid. So I don’t think there is any point talking about him. Man United might be silly enough to involve themselves in a battle for him, but if he wants to go to Madrid, they should let him go there.”
“I think he is just waiting for them. As a player, he would be a very good fit, but I think there is no point talking about it.”
With Luke Shaw continuing to struggle with injuries, Manchester United need to find a left-back in the near future, so it is no surprise to see them linked to Davies, but there are definitely some good options in Europe if he doesn’t want to join them.
Manchester United are mid-table, but will hoping to finish in the top 4. They are currently 7/1 to achieve this, with the bookies currently having them at below clubs like Newcastle, Spurs and Aston Villa.
