With 14 wins, and 1 draw, Manchester City are threatening to win the 2017/2018 Premier League at a canter. Our Premier League Tips are based on what we saw last week; a double header of Premier League fixtures, and Pep Guardiola’s men won both by 2 goals to 1, thanks to late goals. This is in contrast to the hammerings they’ve delivered earlier in the season which shows they are capable of winning ugly too.
One team not prepared to give up the chase though, are their local rivals Man Utd. They may be 8 points behind but they’re the only team that are keeping up the chase while all of the others fall away. United beat Watford 4-2 in midweek and capped it off with a 3-1 away victory away at Arsenal, giving Mourinho a long awaited away win against a top 6 side.
And the two come head to head this weekend in what could almost be an early season title decider. If City win, they extend their lead to 11 points, and given their quality, it is hard to see them being caught. Should United win though, the lead is cut to 5 points and it’s game on.
We’ll look at the best bets this weekend in two other local Premier League derbies, before giving you hot Premier League tips for the top of the table clash.
Premier League Tips: West Ham have conceded at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches
Slaven Bilic wasn’t producing results, so he was shown the door and David Moyes was brought in to clean up the mess. Only, that doesn’t look like it is happening any time soon.
The new West Ham boss has overseen 4 Premier League matches, and watched his side lose 3 and draw 1. They did put up a bit of a better fight against Manchester City last time out, going into halftime 1 nil up. However City eventually broke them down and came out on top thanks to a 83rd minute David Silva winner.
West Ham fans will be getting worried, and they need to start picking up points quickly. They are second from bottom in the table, having conceded a whopping 32 goals, which gives them the worst defensive record in the division.
This has in part lead to Joe Hart getting the chop, and Adrian has come in and looks like he will retain his place after a solid showing against Manchester City.
The likes of Jose Fonte, Winston Reid and James Collins remain out, meaning West Ham have just one senior central defender available. Declan rice, an 18 year old academy prospect will likely make his 8th Premier League appearance of the season.
But it’s not all bad news, with Andy Carroll still out, West Ham fans will be happy to hear that Chicharito is now fit and available to make his first appearance under David Moyes. Mark Noble looks like he may be able to return also.
With 6 wins in their last 7 Premier League matches, last season’s Champions Chelsea have slowly been picking up the pace in the hope they can catch the current league leaders. They have been going under the radar somewhat, and will be aware that a win can close the gap to the top should Manchester United win the Manchester derby.
Only David Luiz is a doubt for the London derby against West Ham, and Antonio Conte has a fresh quad to call from. Marcos Alonso and Danny drinkwater look likely to come into the team, and Rudiger, Willian and Pedro are also options if Conte wishes to refresh the side following their midweek draw against Atletico Madrid.
It’s looking like it could be another long afternoon for West Ham fans.
Premier League Tips: Liverpool have scored at least 3 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches
Liverpool have answered critics following their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham by winning 5 of their last 6, scoring a whopping 19 Premier League goals in the process. Added to the 20 Champions League goals they’ve scored in 4 games, and it’s looking like their front four of Mane, Salah, Coutinho and Firmino are really starting to click.
Unfortunately that may be a little too late to think about challenging for the League title this season, but things bode well for a Champions League place, and some good cup runs.
But form can go out the window in these Merseyside derbies, and it is looking like it will be a hotly contested affair, especially as Everton have appointed a manager that will have his men up for a battle, Sam Allardyce.
Big Sam had actually announced his retirement from club management in July, but Everton have managed to tempt him back. And there is one thing for sure when Big Sam is involved – he will make his teams very solid defensively.
Knowing the attacking prowess that Liverpool are showing, it is likely that his Everton team will go to Anfield with a safety first mindset, and make it very difficult for Liverpool to find space. He will then look to exploit Liverpool’s weak defence. So perhaps this isn’t looking like quite the one sided game that the form suggests.
In fact, he is concentrating on this fixture so much, that he has sent a youthful team to play the clubs Europa league match this week, which will be managed by Craig Shakespeare. Big Sam has stayed at home to get his starting 11 ready for this weekend’s challenge. Unorthodox, maybe, but it’s the type of common sense approach which we have come to expect from the former England manager.
Premier League Tips: Man Utd have won their last 8 home matches
These are the games that Jose Mourinho lives for. He knows that nothing but a win will do. As a result, we are expecting all out warfare and a masterclass in the tactical dark arts.
If there is one man that can come up with a plan to stop Manchester City’s flying attack, it is Jose Mourinho. His side have the best defensive record in the league so far this season, conceding just 9 goals. But of course, they have to keep out the best attack in the division.
But United are now 40 matches unbeaten at Old Trafford, with 7 clean sheets in their last 8 at home. This is key to this week’s premier league tips.
The only real concern for Mourinho is that he will have to do without Paul Pogba following his red card against Arsenal. It is expected that Ander Herrera and Phil Jones will be the only changes to the team that beat Arsenal last weekend.
Manchester City meanwhile have been experiencing a noticeable dip in recent weeks. Well, we say dip, but they’ve still won their last 3 Premier League games by 2 goals to 1. However all three victories have been thanks to late goals. They also lost their midweek match against Shakhtar Donetsk. So this weekend will show whether they’re really starting to show signs of weakness, or whether they’re really going to run away with the title.
Manchester City only have John Stones and Benjamin Mendy as definite absentees. David Silva is doubtful and it is touch and go whether he will be fit to face United. But, given the attacking options City have, Guardiola will probably not take the risk.
We are predicting a result most neutrals want, one which will keep the Premier League title race exciting for a little while longer.
