We analysed the number of instagram followers for each club participating in the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership, from before the season started to the day it ended, and created the Scottish Premiership Instagram Power Ranking.
Celtic trump Rangers in the Instagram game
Postecouglou’s cohort’s successful season also translated on Instagram where the club gained 67,487 followers - the most of any club in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic’s total Instagram followers at the start of the season was 668,347 but on 28th May, it was well past the 700K mark as the Hoops had 735,924 followers.
Rangers started the season with 640,756 followers and ended it with 664,724 followers - a gain of 23,968 followers. That gain was less than half of Celtic’s follower gain.
Highest and lowest percentage increases
Hearts were the Scottish club with the biggest percentage increase in Instagram followers. Their gain of 9,081 followers through the season was a 15,25 percent increase.
St Mirren are second when it comes to the biggest percentage gain in followers with a 13.89 percent increase, followed by Livingston (12.89 percent increase).
Celtic posted a 10.1 percent increase in followers - the fifth-highest in the league.
Rangers’ gain of 23,968 followers is the lowest when it comes to percentage increase - 3.74 percent. Motherwell (4.91 percent increase) and Dundee United (6.59 percent increase) were slightly better than the Gers.
Methodology
- We scraped the Instagram followers of all clubs participating in the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership before the season started
- We then scraped the followers on 27 May, 2023 after all matches were over
- We analysed the the increase in followers for each club and created a the table to showcase the number and percentage increase in followers
