John Barnes Premier League Predictions 2017 - Matchweek 22

This weeks tips from Brand Ambassador John Barnes are for the next round of the English Premier League – Match week 22.

As we head into the second half of the Premier League season, gaps are beginning to open up between the leading pack and the teams struggling at the bottom, making it a crucial time for clubs looking to avoid being cut-off from the title race, or dragged into the relegation battle. We asked Liverpool and England legend John Barnes to run the rule over this weekend’s matches, and give his predictions for the three biggest games.

Manchester City vs Tottenham

Both these sides head into this clash with differing fortunes of late, despite being in contention to win the Premier League. Manchester City were embarrassed last weekend at the hands of Everton as Pep Guardiola suffered the biggest defeat of his career at Goodison Park. Something clearly isn’t working and big-money signing John Stones looks susceptible to making a mistake in every game he plays at present, making City fragile at the back.

Tottenham, however, are flying, and are quietly closing the gap on leaders Chelsea, while being tipped as the dark horses to lift the Premier League trophy. The form of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli is part of the reason their form has been so impressive and Mauricio Pochettino has them firing on all cylinders. They are, however, without influential defender Jan Vertonghen, who is set to miss two months after suffering an ankle injury during the win over West Brom.

John Barnes’ tip: The BonusCodeBets ambassador thinks Guardiola’s side will bounce back from last weekend’s defeat and rock the Tottenham title charge at the Etihad. John is confident City have enough about them and is backing the home side to win 2-1.

Stoke vs Manchester United

Jose Mourinho appears to have got it right at Manchester United after a sluggish start to his time at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are unbeaten in 12 Premier League games and look back on track to try to mount a late title charge. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have shone in the last couple of months but Ander Herrera has played a crucial part in allowing the attacking players more freedom.

They face a Stoke City side, who have struggled for consistency but are reaping the rewards of bringing Peter Crouch back into the equation. The lanky striker has scored in his last three Premier League games and was in terrific form against Sunderland last weekend. Mark Hughes’ side remain in the top half and while they may struggle to keep up with the top six, they’ll be eyeing up Everton in seventh.

John Barnes’ tip: United may to a task to tough for Stoke as Mourinho continues to build up a side capable of winning the Premier League. John feels the Red Devils will come away from the Britannia with a 3-1 win, which you can get at 12/1 with most bookmakers.

Liverpool vs Swansea

After being pegged back by a late Manchester United goal last weekend, Liverpool left Old Trafford ruing missed chances and saw the gap between them and Chelsea grow. Jurgen Klopp’s attack-minded side were impressive against the Red Devils but missed the pace and guile of Sadio Mane, who is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations. But the absence of the Senegal international gives the likes of Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge a chance to stake a claim, and will be looking at Swansea thinking it’s easy-pickings.

The Welsh side are in big trouble and have recently appointed Paul Clement to try and save them from playing Championship football next season. The Swans were thumped 4-0 by Arsenal last weekend and remain rock-bottom of the Premier League. But the recent signings of Tom Carroll, Martin Olsson and Luciano Narsingh have boosted their ranks, with the trio likely to make their debuts at Anfield.

John Barnes’ tip: Despite being without the influential Mane, Liverpool’s attack is one of the league’s most exciting and they face a side who leak goals. Klopp will be eager to get back to winning ways and John has predicted a 4-1 win for his former side, who you can back to win at 1/4.
